If you haven't ventured down to the south of Tasmania for the Willie Smith's Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival then you're missing something spectacular. Along with fabulous music and food, their Wassailing ritual has become the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. They don't do things in halves down here. A salute to the humble apple, wassailing draws on pagan traditions to scare away evil spirits and bless the trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming season.
Wassail is a hot mulled cider, commonly consumed during this ritual. The word wassail means 'be in good health'. Said as a greeting during wassailing, the response is then, 'drink and be healthy.
To celebrate this tradition, we have made large, textured cups for this warm cider with spicy aroma, so you can wrap your hands around and warm up on a winters night.
